July India BI dips 0.20% over June; Automobile and Consumer Electronics posting the two largest single-month gains on the index

3 August 2026, Mumbai: TRA Research today released the July 2026 reading of India Buying Intent (India BI), a macro-economic index built for marketers allowing them to get a reading of urban Indian consumers’ readiness to buy. The July 2026 India BI stands at 99.40, down 0.20% over June 2026. India BI covers BI scores of All-India and Super-category readiness to buy.

The July reading points the urban India is holding steady in its keenness-to-buy rather than pulling back broadly. India BI is classified as Stable, with 23 of 35 super-categories still expanding. TRA's reading is that the month's softness is narrow and concentrated, not systemic, and sits squarely within India's monsoon season, a period that historically sees softer discretionary spending and dampened mobility as consumers pause on non-essential purchases. Print Media (+250%), Branded Fashion (+245%) and Hospitality (+241%) Super-categories saw the largest rises, while DTH (-89%), Transportation (-49%) and Petcare (-47%) saw the biggest falls.

Mr. N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, publishers of India BI data, said, “July points to a market absorbing real pressure without losing its footing. An oil price shock and peak monsoon would normally soften a reading like this far more than 0.20%. Instead, Automobile and Consumer Electronics posted the two sharpest single-month recoveries we've tracked in over a year, up 2.50 and 2.10 units respectively. For marketers, the signal is clear: this is not a broad slowdown, it is a market rewarding the categories that stayed the course through a difficult month.”

Two Super-Categories account for most of July's positive movement. Consumer Electronics rebounded to 14.00, from 11.90 in June, a recovery of 2.10 units and the largest single-month gain across TRA's entire super-category heatmap. Automobile followed closely, climbing to 10.30, from 7.80, a gain of 2.50 units, its sharpest one-month rise in over a year. Both categories had softened in June, and both show a clear reversal this cycle.

The wider improvement was broad-based: BFSI strengthened from 5.10 to 6.20, Personal Accessories from 4.70 to 5.80, FMCG from 8.20 to 9.10, Retail from 3.40 to 4.20, Digital from 6.30 to 7.00, and Technology from 5.90 to 6.20. Food & Beverage (12.60 to 10.40) and Gadgetry (8.70 to 7.80) were the two exceptions among the larger consumer categories, both easing after a stronger June.

On the macro backdrop, oil prices rose sharply this month as the US-Iran conflict widened, a pressure that is starting to show up in input costs across sectors. Stable forex reserves and ongoing India-EU trade talks offered some counterweight, though the oil shock remains the month's dominant cross-current.

For marketers, the July reading suggests campaign planning should lean into the categories already showing renewed momentum. Automobile and Consumer Electronics may justify stronger media weight and sharper conversion-led action this month, while Food & Beverage and Gadgetry may need more reassurance, value signalling and trust-building before aggressive selling.

The monthly tracking of India BI helps brands, marketers, agencies, media houses, consultants, researchers and business analysts understand the state of the market and its direction. By monitoring changes in brand and category momentum month after month, the index offers an early view of emerging consumer trends, competitive shifts and evolving purchase behaviour across the marketplace.
